Canada: Two Injured in Knife Attack at Edmonton Gurdwara, Suspect Arrested

Ottawa (Terror Monitor) — Canadian police have arrested a 27-year-old man accused of injuring two people in a knife attack at a gurdwara in Edmonton early Friday morning.

Police said the incident occurred at Nanaksar Gurdwara at around 5 a.m. local time. The suspect allegedly entered the gurdwara and attempted to access an area designated for worship, prompting staff members to intervene.

Acting Inspector Eric Stewart said the situation escalated and two worshippers were stabbed.

People at the gurdwara intervened and restrained the suspect until police arrived, officials said.

The two injured men, aged 75 and 51, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were reported to be in stable condition.

Police have not released the suspect’s identity or provided information about a possible motive.

Authorities said the suspect was already known to police and had a lengthy record involving multiple violent incidents dating back to 2015.

Police said he had been released from a federal correctional facility one day before the attack but failed to report to his designated rehabilitation centre in Edmonton.

The attack comes amid concerns over anti-Sikh incidents in Canada. Police in Calgary, about a two-hour drive from Edmonton, said last week that they were investigating threatening phone calls received by two gurdwaras there.

The World Sikh Organization of Canada described the Edmonton incident as “extremely concerning,” saying it occurred amid what it described as an increase in anti-Sikh hate across the country.
