Peshawar (Terror Monitor) — Pakistani counterterrorism officers and police have killed three suspected militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in a joint operation in Tank district, while a separate operation in Bannu district resulted in the death of a senior TTP commander, security sources said.
In Tank, personnel from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and district police conducted a joint operation in the Garah Faqira area along Jandola Road after receiving intelligence that armed terrorists were planning a major attack within the jurisdiction of the S.M.A. Police Station.
According to the CTD, security personnel moved into the area after verifying the intelligence. The armed men allegedly opened fire on the approaching teams, prompting a gun battle that continued for some time.
After the exchange of fire ended, security personnel conducted a search of the area and found three men dead. The CTD identified them as suspected members of the Bhittani faction of the TTP.
Two of the deceased were identified as Usama, son of Sultan, and Suleman, son of Wali Muhammad. Both were reported to be residents of Faqir Kallay in Jandola. The identification of the third man was still under way, according to the authorities.
The CTD said personnel recovered three Kalashnikov rifles, 11 magazines containing ammunition, additional ammunition and a mobile phone during the search operation. Officials said the recovered items could be examined as part of the investigation.
Suspected Links to Previous Bombings and Attacks
According to the CTD, the men killed in Tank were suspected of involvement in previous terrorist activities in the region, including the installation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The department alleged that the suspects had planted an IED on the roof of a shop near the Mera Alam petrol pump. The explosion reportedly killed one civilian and two police personnel and injured seven other people.
The CTD also alleged that explosives had been planted alongside the main road in Wana Bazaar and on the roof of the office of Bilal, the head of a local peace committee. Further details about these incidents were not independently verified.
The department said Usama was the brother of Shoaib, a militant who was killed during the 2025 attack on Bannu Cantonment. It also stated that Musa, who was killed in retaliatory fire following an attack on police in Wana Bazaar, was Usama's cousin.
These alleged family connections and links to earlier attacks were reported by the CTD and have not been independently established.
Senior TTP Commander Killed in Separate Bannu Operation
In a separate development, police and members of a local peace committee conducted a joint operation in the remote Ghoriwala area of Bannu district, during which senior TTP commander Zainullah, also known as Salar, was killed, according to local sources.
The sources said the operation was aimed at improving security and taking action against armed militants operating in the area. No further details about the circumstances of his death, the weapons recovered or possible casualties among the security personnel were immediately available.
The operation in Ghoriwala was separate from the CTD-led action in Tank. Authorities had not publicly released further details about the intelligence that led to the Bannu operation.
Police Leadership Praises Counterterrorism Personnel
According to the CTD spokesperson, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed and the Additional Inspector General of the CTD praised the personnel involved in the Tank operation for their professionalism and bravery.
The department said counterterrorism operations would continue across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to eliminate terrorist threats and protect the lives and property of residents.
Tank and Bannu are among the districts in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that have faced persistent security challenges, including militant attacks, bombings and assaults targeting police and other security personnel.
The TTP has waged an insurgency against the Pakistani state and security forces for years, carrying out attacks across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country. Pakistani authorities have continued intelligence-led operations to disrupt the group's networks, weapons supplies and plans for further attacks.
The latest operations represent renewed security efforts in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, the allegations concerning the suspects' involvement in previous attacks and the details of the Ghoriwala operation remain subject to further official confirmation.
