Washington (Shabbir Turi) — At least 12 people were killed and around 30 others injured in a suicide bombing targeting a joint police and security forces checkpost in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Thursday night.
According to sources, the attack took place at the Manjhi Khel joint police and army checkpost located on the main highway connecting Tank with Dera Ismail Khan, where a vehicle laden with explosives was used in the attack.
The powerful explosion completely destroyed the checkpost building.
Sources said those killed included nine army personnel, two police constables, and one employee of the Forest Department. Around 30 people were injured in the blast.
Some of the injured were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) and District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) in Dera Ismail Khan for treatment. Officials said several injured victims are in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could increase.
Following the attack, security forces and police personnel reached the site, cordoned off the area, and launched a search and clearance operation.
The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out by a suicide bomber.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, while further details are awaited.
