Peshawar (Terror Monitor) — Armed terrorists linked to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have abducted at least 51 people, including employees of the Chashma Sugar Mills Ethanol facility and 17 government personnel, after stopping vehicles at a roadblock on the Main Indus Highway in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district, police and security sources told Terror Monitor.
The incident took place near the Safita Minor area of Paroa tehsil, where between 15 and 20 armed terrorists reportedly established a checkpoint and stopped vehicles travelling along the highway.
According to police sources, the incident was reported at approximately 1 a.m. The attackers stopped a bus carrying night-shift employees of Chashma Sugar Mills Ethanol as they were returning from work.
Initial reports indicated that the armed men checked the identification cards of passengers before taking away 17 employees. Most of the 17 abducted individuals were reportedly security personnel, according to police sources.
However, further information provided to Terror Monitor by officials suggested that the incident involved a larger number of victims and vehicles.
At Least 51 People Abducted From Multiple Vehicles
Officials told Terror Monitor that at least 51 people travelling in different public transport vehicles had been abducted by the armed men.
The abductions reportedly occurred in the border region connecting Dera Ismail Khan, Taunsa in Punjab’s Dera Ghazi Khan district, and Bhakkar district.
Among those abducted were 22 employees of a local sugar mill, officials said. The discrepancy between the initial report of 17 employees taken from the bus and the later figure of 22 mill employees among the overall abductees could not immediately be clarified.
According to officials, the attackers also took away six vehicles and a tractor during the incident.
The reported use of a roadblock to stop multiple vehicles suggests that the operation extended beyond the initial interception of the employees’ bus.
Authorities had not provided a complete breakdown of the identities and affiliations of all 51 abducted people at the time of reporting.
TTP Suspected of Carrying Out the Abductions
Officials told Terror Monitor that the armed attackers belonged to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, an Islamist militant organisation responsible for numerous attacks against Pakistani security forces and civilians.
The group has maintained an operational presence in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and has repeatedly targeted security personnel, police, government installations and individuals travelling through vulnerable areas.
The latest incident raises further concerns about the security of major transport routes connecting southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with neighbouring districts of Punjab.
The Main Indus Highway is an important road link for commercial traffic, public transport and workers travelling between communities and industrial facilities in the region.
Fear Spreads Across the Area
The mass abduction reportedly caused fear among residents of the affected area, particularly because the attackers were said to have stopped several vehicles and taken dozens of people away.
The reported presence of armed men at a roadblock near the provincial border also highlights security concerns along routes linking Dera Ismail Khan with Taunsa and Bhakkar.
Police received information about the incident during the early hours of the morning. Further details regarding the whereabouts of the abducted individuals, the circumstances of their detention and any efforts to secure their release were not immediately available.
It was also unclear whether the attackers had issued any demands or whether authorities had established direct contact with them.
Terror Monitor is continuing to seek further information from police and security officials regarding the identities of those abducted, the status of any recovery operation and the latest developments in the case.
The figures and details in this report are based on information provided by police sources and officials to Terror Monitor. The full list of abductees and the precise circumstances of the incident have not yet been independently verified.
