Pakistan’s Counterterrorism Department Arrests 8 Suspected Terrorists in Punjab Raids

LAHORE (Terror Monitor) — Pakistan’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested eight suspected terrorists allegedly affiliated with banned organizations during intelligence-based operations across several districts of Punjab province, authorities said.

According to a CTD spokesperson, the arrests were made during raids conducted in different parts of the province as part of ongoing efforts to prevent terrorist activities and dismantle networks linked to proscribed organizations.

The spokesperson identified five of the arrested suspects as Shahzad, Mahmood, Nauman, Adnan and Farooq. The identities of the remaining three suspects were not disclosed in the statement.

Security personnel recovered 465 grams of explosive material, two hand grenades, detonators, safety fuse wire, literature associated with banned organizations and other items from the suspects, the spokesperson said.

The department did not disclose specific details about the alleged targets or planned attacks that the suspects may have been preparing.

According to the CTD, the arrested individuals were linked to Gujranwala, Bahawalpur, Chiniot, Rawalpindi, Bhakkar and Sargodha districts of Punjab.

Seven cases have been registered against the suspects, and further investigations are underway to establish their alleged roles, identify possible accomplices and determine whether they were involved in planning terrorist activities.

CTD Conducts Intelligence-Based Operations Across Punjab

The CTD spokesperson said security agencies had intensified their activities across Punjab to identify and apprehend individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism and prevent potential attacks.

According to the department, its personnel conducted 91 intelligence-based operations across the province as part of the campaign against terrorism.

In addition, the CTD, in coordination with police and other security agencies, carried out 1,484 combing operations to identify suspected militants and assess potential security threats.

More than 50,000 individuals were checked during these operations, the spokesperson said.

Combing operations generally involve systematic searches and security checks in selected areas to identify wanted suspects, verify individuals’ identities and gather information about potential criminal or militant networks.

The CTD did not provide a breakdown of the arrests, recoveries or other outcomes resulting from the 91 intelligence-based operations and 1,484 combing operations.

Security Concerns in Punjab

Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, has periodically witnessed counterterrorism operations targeting suspected members of banned militant organizations.

The latest arrests come as Pakistani security agencies continue efforts to disrupt militant networks, seize explosives and other suspected operational materials, and prevent attacks on civilians and security personnel.

Authorities have not yet released further details about the specific organizations to which the eight suspects allegedly belonged.

Investigations are continuing to determine the nature of the suspects’ activities and whether additional individuals are connected to the cases.

The allegations against the arrested individuals have not been independently verified.
