Saudi Arabia: Alleged Suicide Bombing Attempt Foiled, Man Arrested in Mecca
· 123 views
Riyadh (Terror Monitor) — A man has been arrested in Mecca after videos of the incident circulated online alongside claims that an alleged suicide bombing attempt had been foiled. Saudi authorities have not confirmed those claims.
Saudi security authorities said the man was arrested for harassing passersby and causing panic and fear among them. The incident was dealt with immediately, legal measures were taken, and the man was referred to the Public Prosecution, authorities said. Saudi security officials also said claims being circulated about the circumstances of the incident were inaccurate and urged the public to rely on official sources.
Some social media posts and reports by other outlets claimed that the detained man had attempted to carry out a suicide bombing and was wearing what appeared to be an explosive vest. Those claims have not been independently verified and are not supported by the Saudi authorities’ official account.
Terror Monitor’s analysis of the circulating footage found that the location shown in the videos appeared to be near the King Abdulaziz Gate in Mecca. The footage shows security personnel restraining and taking a man into custody.
However, the videos alone do not establish the identity of the man, whether he was carrying explosives or what prompted his arrest. They also do not independently confirm claims that he had reached the Kaaba or that a suicide bombing attempt had taken place.
Saudi authorities have specifically urged the public to obtain information about the incident from official sources and warned against relying on unverified accounts circulating online.
For now, the confirmed information is that a man was arrested in Mecca after allegedly harassing passersby and causing panic, while claims of an attempted suicide bombing or an explosive vest remain unverified.
