AMMAN (Terror Monitor) — At least seven people have been killed and 34 others injured after unknown armed terrorists opened fire during a funeral gathering at a church in Jordan’s southern Karak Governorate on Friday, according to Jordanian authorities and international news agencies. Security forces are pursuing the perpetrators as investigations into the attack continue.
The shooting occurred at Hamoud Church in Karak, approximately 180 kilometres south of the capital, Amman, while mourners were attending a funeral service.
According to Jordan’s state-owned Al-Mamlaka television, citing a security source, the assailants arrived in a vehicle, got out and opened fire on people gathered at the church before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses said the gunfire continued for several minutes, causing panic among those attending the funeral. Security camera footage broadcast by Al-Mamlaka appeared to show three armed individuals firing outside the church before moving towards its entrance.
Jordan’s Public Security Directorate confirmed that seven people had been killed and 34 injured. Officials said the wounded were receiving medical treatment, while security personnel continued efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Government spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani said security forces had been deployed to the area following the shooting.
Jordanian Interior Minister Mazin Al-Farrayeh described the attackers as extremists but said it was too early to determine whether they were affiliated with any known group inside or outside the country. No group had claimed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting.
ISIS Involvement Remains Unconfirmed
In the past, the Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Jordan. However, there has been no confirmation so far that ISIS was involved in the recent shooting at a church in Karak.
Jordanian authorities have not publicly attributed the attack to ISIS or any other militant organization. Investigators are working to establish the identities of the assailants, their motives and whether they had links to any organized group.
The possibility of an extremist connection has drawn attention because the attack targeted a religious gathering. However, the attackers’ affiliation and the motive behind the shooting remain unconfirmed.
King Abdullah Condemns Attack
Jordan’s King Abdullah II visited Karak following the incident and condemned the attack, vowing that those responsible would face severe punishment.
The king emphasized national unity, saying the perpetrators would not succeed in dividing Jordanians through violence. The attack has raised concerns because shootings of this nature are rare in Jordan, which has generally maintained relative stability despite regional security challenges.
Karak is home to a significant Christian community in the predominantly Muslim kingdom. The region also has historical and religious significance and attracts visitors to several important sites.
Investigation Underway
Security forces continue to search for the perpetrators as investigators examine available surveillance footage and gather witness statements.
Authorities have not yet established whether the church was specifically targeted because of its religious affiliation or whether the attack was motivated by other factors.
As of Friday, seven people had been killed and 34 injured. No organization had claimed responsibility, and any alleged ISIS connection remained unverified.
