TEHRAN (Terror Monitor) — A prominent Sunni Muslim religious leader was killed by unidentified gunmen on Monday in the southeastern Iranian border town of Mirjaveh, officials and state media reported.
The victim, identified as Maulvi Mohammad Anwar Rigi, was a Friday prayer preacher at a mosque in Mirjaveh. His killing was confirmed by Iranian state media and local authorities.
Mirjaveh is located in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province, one of the country’s least developed regions, where the majority of the population belongs to the Sunni Muslim Baloch community.
The province has also long been a hotspot for armed activity by ethnic militant groups, with frequent clashes reported between militants and Iranian security forces or allied local armed groups.
Local officials and investigators said efforts were underway to identify those responsible for Rigi’s killing, while urging residents to remain calm, warning that the attack may have been aimed at creating security tensions and fueling sectarian unrest in the predominantly Shia country.
