QUETTA (Terror Monitor) — Two police officers were killed and three people, including a police officer and two passersby, were injured when armed men travelling in a car opened fire on police in Quetta, the provincial capital of Pakistan’s troubled southwestern Balochistan province, police said.
According to a police spokesperson, the incident began in the Satellite Town area, where officers at a security checkpoint signalled a car to stop for inspection.
Instead of stopping, the armed occupants allegedly opened fire on the police and fled, prompting officers to pursue the vehicle.
The spokesperson said the suspects opened fire again after reaching Joint Road, striking police personnel during the exchange of gunfire.
Two police officers were killed in the attack, while another officer sustained injuries. Two passersby were also wounded after being caught in the gunfire, according to police.
The injured were taken for medical treatment. Authorities have not released their identities or provided further details about their conditions.
Following the shooting, police launched a search operation and began conducting raids to locate and arrest the suspects. The spokesperson said efforts were under way to apprehend those responsible.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Balochistan continues to face security threats from several banned militant and terrorist organizations, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Islamic State (IS). These organizations have been linked to violence in different parts of Pakistan, including attacks targeting security personnel and civilians.
However, authorities have not identified the perpetrators of the latest shooting or established any connection between the incident and a particular militant organization.
The attack highlights continuing security challenges in Balochistan, where police and other security personnel have been targeted in separate incidents.
Police investigations and search operations were continuing, with further details expected as authorities work to identify the suspects and establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
