US Deploys Third Aircraft Carrier and 2,000 Marines to Middle East as Trump Weighs Further Action Against Iran

Washington, D.C. (Terror Monitor) — The United States is deploying a third aircraft carrier strike group and more than 2,000 additional Marines to the Middle East as President Donald Trump keeps the option of renewed military action against Iran open amid continuing regional tensions and uncertainty over diplomatic efforts.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group departed San Diego, California, on Sunday, September 27, while the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group departed the following day, according to US officials cited by Al Jazeera and other news organisations. The deployments will add substantial naval and amphibious capabilities to the American military presence in the region.
A US official told Al Jazeera that the Makin Island force includes more than 2,000 Marines and that three aircraft carriers and two amphibious landing groups are expected to be positioned around Iran by the end of November.
The additional forces are intended to preserve a range of military options for Trump should he order further operations. The deployments do not, by themselves, establish that a decision to launch another attack has been made.
Thousands of Additional Personnel and Advanced Aircraft
The new deployments come on top of approximately 50,000 US military personnel already stationed across the Middle East, according to the reporting cited by Al Jazeera. Additional personnel, naval vessels and combat aircraft, including F-35 fighter jets, are also being moved into the region.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt, a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, serves as the centrepiece of its carrier strike group. Such groups typically operate alongside guided-missile cruisers, destroyers and embarked aircraft, providing air power, surveillance and maritime security capabilities.
The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group includes amphibious ships designed to transport and support Marine forces. The group can provide capabilities for amphibious operations, logistical support and other military missions, depending on operational requirements.
The concentration of carrier-based aviation, escort vessels and Marine units would give US commanders additional flexibility in planning operations across the region. However, the specific missions assigned to the newly deployed forces have not been publicly detailed.
According to the US official cited by Al Jazeera, the planned force posture by the end of November would include three aircraft carriers and two amphibious landing groups operating in the vicinity of Iran. The exact timing and operational positioning may depend on deployment schedules and developments in the region.
Hegseth Says US Forces Are Ready
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said American forces are prepared to carry out further operations if ordered by the president.
The administration's stated objective in maintaining military options is to ensure that US forces remain positioned to respond to developments involving Iran and regional security. The deployment also comes amid uncertainty over diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Trump retains the authority to direct military operations as commander-in-chief, subject to applicable US law and constitutional requirements. The arrival of additional forces would expand the range of military capabilities available to the administration, but it does not establish whether or when those capabilities will be used.
The latest movements have also renewed attention to the demands placed on US naval forces, which have had to maintain extended deployments and adjust the positioning of carrier strike groups in response to developments in the Middle East.
Tensions Surrounding the Strait of Hormuz
The military buildup comes amid continuing security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which substantial quantities of the world's oil supplies normally pass.
On Saturday, Reuters reported that a crude oil tanker had been struck by an unidentified projectile approximately four nautical miles east of Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency. The vessel's crew were reported safe, and there were no immediate indications of environmental damage. The source of the projectile and the circumstances of the incident remained unknown in the initial report.
Separate regional reports described a tanker carrying approximately 2.5 million barrels of oil catching fire after being struck by a projectile. The reported cargo quantity and the precise circumstances of that incident require independent confirmation, and it has not been established that the report and the UKMTO incident refer to the same vessel.
The maritime incidents underline the security risks facing commercial shipping in waters near the Arabian Peninsula. Any sustained disruption to tanker traffic could affect energy transportation, shipping costs and international oil markets.
However, no publicly confirmed evidence in the initial reports established who launched the projectile or whether the tanker incident was directly connected to the latest US deployments.
