PESHAWAR (Terror Monitor) — Pakistani security agencies have arrested an armed Afghan national during an alleged attempt by an armed group to enter Pakistan from Afghanistan through the northwestern district of Upper Kurram, while a separate hand-grenade attack on a local contractor’s guesthouse in Bannu injured two people, police and security sources said.
In the Kurram incident, security sources identified the arrested Afghan national as Qari Waqas, alias Quddoos, reportedly a resident of Afghanistan’s Spin Ghar region.
According to the sources, Waqas was part of an armed group attempting to cross into Pakistan. Security personnel intercepted the group near the border, arresting Waqas, while the other members reportedly failed to enter Pakistani territory.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly told investigators that he had entered Pakistan to join the Khariji Kazim Group, the sources said. His alleged affiliation and stated intentions have not been independently verified.
A search of his possession led to the recovery of a submachine gun, four magazines and 88 rounds of ammunition. Security personnel also seized a notebook containing information about various locations and notes on bomb-making techniques, according to the sources.
The recovered material is expected to be examined as part of the investigation into the suspect’s alleged links, intended activities and possible associates. Further interrogation of Waqas is underway, the sources added.
Grenade attack on contractor’s guesthouse in Bannu
In a separate incident, two people were injured when unidentified attackers threw a hand grenade at the guesthouse, locally known as a hujra, of a contractor in Bannu district.
The attack took place late at night in the Matki Bezan Khel area of Township, where the target was the hujra belonging to local contractor Malik Zahir Shah, according to police sources.
The explosion damaged the guesthouse and wounded two people. The injured were provided with initial medical assistance and shifted to a hospital for treatment, the sources said.
Police reached the scene after receiving information about the explosion, collected evidence and launched an investigation to identify those responsible.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and police have not yet identified the perpetrators or established a motive.
Rising security concerns in northwestern Pakistan
The two incidents come amid continuing security challenges in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which shares a lengthy and mountainous border with Afghanistan.
The border region, including Kurram, has experienced repeated security incidents and exchanges of fire involving Pakistani forces and Afghan Taliban personnel. The Associated Press has previously reported on clashes in the Kurram border area, in which both sides exchanged fire following reported attempts by armed groups to cross into Pakistan.
Islamabad has repeatedly accused armed groups, particularly the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), of using sanctuaries in Afghanistan to plan and launch attacks inside Pakistan. Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities have denied allowing their territory to be used against other countries.
The latest reported arrest and the grenade attack in Bannu highlight the continuing security concerns facing residents and law-enforcement agencies in the province. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
