Hezbollah Chief Naim Qassem Vows to Continue Resistance Regardless of Israel Election Outcome

BEIRUT (Terror Monitor) — Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has said that the outcome of Israel’s parliamentary elections will not affect the Lebanese armed group's policies or its continued confrontation with Israel, pledging to maintain what it describes as its resistance regardless of which political party forms the next Israeli government.

In a written statement released on Wednesday, Qassem said Hezbollah was not concerned about the results of Israel’s elections, arguing that the group's struggle was linked to the ongoing conflict with Israel rather than developments in Israeli domestic politics.

“We do not concern ourselves with who governs Israel, but let it be perfectly clear that it cannot continue its occupation and must leave our land,” Qassem said.

He added that Hezbollah would continue its resistance and confront what he described as Israeli aggression against the group and Lebanon.

“The resistance will continue and will stand up to the aggression directed against it and against Lebanon,” he said, adding that there was no room for discussions about Hezbollah's disarmament as long as Israeli occupation and attacks continued.

His remarks were reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP) and carried by several regional and international media outlets.

Netanyahu's Bloc Leads but Falls Short of Majority

Qassem's statement came amid political uncertainty following Israel's parliamentary elections, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing bloc initially held a narrow lead over the main opposition alliance.

With approximately 85 percent of ballots counted, Netanyahu's bloc was ahead but had failed to secure the 61 seats required for a parliamentary majority in the 120-member Knesset.

Subsequent results showed Netanyahu's bloc with 53 seats, while the opposition alliance led by Gadi Eisenkot held 48 seats. Arab-led parties were projected to secure 19 seats, potentially making their support decisive in efforts to form a government.

The inconclusive result has opened the door to difficult coalition negotiations, with neither major political bloc initially securing enough seats to govern independently.

Hezbollah Rejects Disarmament Amid Israeli-Lebanese Tensions

Qassem's remarks also highlighted Hezbollah's continued opposition to disarmament while Israeli forces remain in Lebanese territory and military operations continue.

In June, Israeli and Lebanese authorities signed a framework agreement involving the disarmament of Hezbollah, a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied areas and the deployment of Lebanese army forces in the affected territory.

However, implementation has faced significant obstacles. Israel has continued conducting strikes and demolitions in parts of Lebanon, while Hezbollah has rejected calls to surrender its weapons.

The group has been significantly weakened by two major wars with Israel since 2023, but its leadership continues to insist that its armed capabilities remain necessary as long as Israeli forces occupy Lebanese territory and carry out attacks.

Qassem's latest statement therefore signals that Hezbollah does not intend to change its position based on the outcome of Israel's elections.

The remarks also underscore the continuing obstacles to implementing the Israeli-Lebanese framework agreement and achieving a broader settlement between the two sides.
