Russian Drone Strike Kills 14 at Crowded Ukrainian Railway Station as Attacks Across Country Leave 19 Dead

KYIV (Terror Monitor) — At least 19 people were killed and dozens more injured in a series of Russian drone and missile strikes across Ukraine on Thursday, October 29, including an attack on a crowded railway station platform in the eastern city of Dnipro that killed at least 14 people, Ukrainian officials said.
The deadly attacks also killed two teenage girls in the northern city of Chernihiv and three people in strikes on residential buildings in the central city of Kremenchuk, according to Ukrainian authorities. Additional attacks in other areas caused further injuries and damage to civilian infrastructure.
Deadly Strike on Dnipro Railway Station
The deadliest attack occurred at Dnipro’s main railway station, where a Russian jet-powered drone struck a crowded platform as passengers waited to board trains, including a service travelling to Zaporizhzhia.
Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said the drone hit a platform near passenger train No. 866, which was preparing to travel from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia.
The strike killed at least 14 people and injured another 14, according to regional authorities. Six of the injured were reported to be in serious condition, with several suffering multiple shrapnel wounds.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russian forces had launched four jet-powered drones toward the Dnipropetrovsk region. Air defence systems intercepted three, while the fourth struck the railway station.
The railway operator said an air-raid warning had been issued before the attack and that evacuation announcements had been made. Despite the warnings, numerous passengers remained on the platform when the drone struck.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, describing it as horrific and calling for stronger international action against Moscow.
He argued that sanctions against Russia and its war machine should not be eased while the war continues, urging the United States and European countries to respond to the escalation.
Two Teenage Girls Killed in Chernihiv
In the northern city of Chernihiv, a Russian strike on a central urban area killed two 15-year-old girls, identified by President Zelensky as Yana and Mariia.
Ukrainian officials reported that 23 people were injured in the attack, including children. A 10-month-old girl was among those reported wounded.
The strike damaged residential buildings, shops and vehicles in the area, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi condemned the attacks, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting civilians on trains, at railway stations and in residential buildings.
“There is no justification for this terror, and there never can be,” he wrote in a post on Telegram.
Three Killed in Kremenchuk
In the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk, another Russian drone strike hit an area containing residential buildings, killing three people and injuring dozens, according to Ukrainian officials.
The attacks across Dnipro, Chernihiv and Kremenchuk brought the reported death toll to at least 19. Ukrainian officials also reported strikes affecting other locations, including Zaporizhzhia, where attacks on buses wounded six people.
The latest strikes have further disrupted civilian life and damaged transport and residential infrastructure as Ukraine continues to face pressure on its air-defence capabilities.
European Union Calls for Greater Pressure on Moscow
European Council President António Costa condemned the attacks, expressing condolences to the Ukrainian people and calling on international partners to increase pressure on Russia.
Costa said the European Union would continue supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression until a just and lasting peace was achieved.
His statement followed the strike on Dnipro’s railway station and attacks on residential neighbourhoods in Chernihiv and Kremenchuk.
The European Union has maintained its position that support for Ukraine and pressure on Moscow should continue while efforts to secure a lasting settlement remain unresolved.
Local Ceasefire Offers Limited Hope for Diplomacy
The attacks occurred as a fragile, six-day local ceasefire in the southern Kherson region entered its third day.
The arrangement covers the area around Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town where residents have faced shortages of food, water and medicine. The temporary pause has allowed Russian and Ukrainian teams to prepare a humanitarian aid mission and clear mines along planned routes.
The local truce has raised cautious hopes for further diplomatic engagement, although fighting and deadly strikes have continued elsewhere in Ukraine.
The ceasefire is limited in scope and does not constitute a nationwide halt to hostilities. Efforts to revive broader, US-backed peace negotiations have continued amid persistent disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv.
Thursday’s attacks underscored the challenges facing those efforts, with civilian casualties mounting even as a limited humanitarian arrangement remained in place.
