Moscow (Terror Monitor) Ukraine launched a large-scale drone assault targeting multiple regions across Russia, with the capital Moscow among the main targets, according to Russia’s Ministry of Defense. The attack is being described as one of the most significant drone strikes on Moscow in recent months.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a total of 555 Ukrainian drones across various regions, including approximately 200 drones approaching Moscow.
According to Russian officials, loud explosions were heard across several districts of the capital during the overnight attack, while thick plumes of smoke were seen rising near a major oil refinery. The strikes reportedly triggered panic in several areas of the city.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that while most drones were intercepted, some managed to penetrate air defenses and caused damage within the capital, including a strike on a major oil refinery.
In one incident, a drone impact reportedly sent the lid of a large oil storage tank flying into the air, while another strike sparked a fire at a shopping mall in southeastern Moscow. A separate drone impact reportedly hit a high-rise residential building, though it remains unclear whether it was a direct target or the result of air defense activity.
Authorities confirmed that at least 17 people were injured in the attacks. Following the strikes, operations at all four major Moscow airports were temporarily suspended.
Russian officials did not immediately provide full details regarding the extent of material damage, but described the assault as one of the largest Ukrainian drone operations targeting the capital in recent months.
Ukraine has not issued a detailed statement on the latest wave of attacks. However, in previous operations, Kyiv has repeatedly targeted Russian energy infrastructure, aiming to weaken Moscow’s war capacity and economic resources.
The incident comes amid continued escalation in the conflict, with both sides intensifying strikes on strategic infrastructure.
