ISLAMABAD/KABUL (Terror Monitor) — Pakistan said on Wednesday that it had shot down eight drones that entered its airspace from Afghanistan, while the Afghan Taliban government denied carrying out any drone attack against Pakistan.
According to Pakistani security sources cited by state media, four of the drones were intercepted near the Torkham border crossing, while four others were shot down in mountainous areas adjoining Kohat.
The sources said the drones were linked to the Afghan Taliban government. Pakistan’s air defenses intercepted the drones before they could reach their intended targets.
Afghan Taliban Defense Ministry spokesman Sediqullah Nusrat rejected the Pakistani account in comments to the BBC, saying Afghanistan had not launched any attack against Pakistan. He said the Afghan Air Force had not carried out any drone attacks and that Kabul would decide the timing and nature of any response.
TTP Infiltration Attempt Reported in Kurram
The development came after Pakistani security forces reportedly thwarted an attempted infiltration by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists in the Kurram sector.
Pakistani security sources said Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts after the infiltration attempt was stopped. Pakistani forces responded by targeting Afghan Taliban border posts and mortar positions.
Pakistani Airstrikes in Afghanistan
The latest escalation follows Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Paktika provinces on Monday.
Pakistan said the strikes targeted hideouts of TTP and affiliated terrorist groups based on intelligence information and killed 28 terrorists, including several suicide bombers.
The Afghan Taliban government said the strikes killed at least three civilians, including women. Taliban officials also said an appropriate response would be given at a suitable time.
The latest incidents have further increased tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
