Saudi Arabia Issues Alert in Jazan Amid Possible Houthi Threat

Riyadh (Terror Monitor) — Saudi Arabia has issued an alert in the Jazan province bordering Yemen over a “potential threat” amid a series of recent attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeting oil and energy facilities in the area.

Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense Directorate said Sunday that a warning had been issued through the National Early Warning Platform to alert residents of Jazan to a possible threat. Such alerts are typically issued ahead of a potential attack or other security incident.

The Iran-backed Houthi movement has targeted several oil and energy facilities in Jazan in recent weeks.

Last month, as tensions between the United States, Iran and their regional allies escalated, a years-long ceasefire between Yemen’s Houthis and the Saudi-backed internationally recognized Yemeni government also came under strain.

Following the collapse of the ceasefire brokered under UN auspices in 2022, the Houthis announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia.

Reports have since emerged of attacks targeting Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and Saudi oil infrastructure.

The latest developments come as Iran has imposed a blockade around the Strait of Hormuz on the opposite side of the Arabian Peninsula.

The Houthis control large parts of Yemen, including the capital Sana’a and areas along the border with Saudi Arabia.
