Saudi-Led Coalition Intercepts Houthi Drone in Makkah Region; Houthis Deny Launching Attack

RIYADH (Terror Monitor) — The Saudi-led military coalition fighting Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group announced on Friday that it had intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by the Houthis in the Makkah region of Saudi Arabia.

Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki announced the interception in a statement published on the social media platform X, saying that an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) launched by the Houthi militia had been intercepted and destroyed in the Makkah region.

The coalition described the drone as having been launched by what it called the terrorist Houthi militia. However, its statement did not disclose the precise interception location, the drone's intended target, its flight path or the type of air defence system used to destroy it.

The announcement comes amid escalating military tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi movement, which has repeatedly carried out cross-border attacks against Saudi territory.

Houthis Deny Responsibility

In a separate development, Yemen's Houthi movement denied launching any attack against Saudi Arabia on Friday, rejecting the coalition's account of the drone interception.

According to Reuters and Anadolu Agency, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group had not conducted any military operation targeting Saudi territory that day.

Saree dismissed the Saudi-led coalition's statement as a false allegation, describing the claim that a drone had been intercepted over Makkah as a major fabrication.

He maintained that the group's military operations were directed at Saudi oil facilities and military installations rather than the holy city of Makkah.

Reuters reported that the Houthis have repeatedly denied targeting Makkah and Madinah, Islam's two holiest cities, following previous accusations by the Saudi-led coalition.

Additional Missile Interception Reported

The drone incident was reported amid a series of other military developments involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.

Anadolu Agency reported that earlier on Friday, coalition spokesperson Al-Maliki had announced the interception and destruction of a Houthi cruise missile targeting western Saudi Arabia.

Al Jazeera, citing reports from AFP and Reuters, also reported the missile interception alongside the drone incident, describing the developments as part of the escalating confrontation between the Saudi-backed Yemeni government and the Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

The coalition had also reported intercepting ballistic missiles targeting Saudi Arabia in the preceding days.

The Houthis, meanwhile, announced on Thursday that they had carried out six attacks against targets inside Saudi Arabia, including oil facilities and airports. These claims of successful attacks were not independently verified in the available reports.

Background of the Yemen Conflict

The Saudi-led military coalition intervened in Yemen's civil war in March 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government against the Houthi movement.

The Houthis seized control of Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in September 2014 and subsequently expanded their control over large parts of the country.

The conflict has since evolved into a regional confrontation involving Saudi Arabia and Iran, with the Houthis receiving Iranian support and repeatedly launching missiles and drones across the Saudi border.

The latest developments underscore the continuing risk of further military escalation, as both sides issue competing statements over attacks and interceptions involving Saudi territory.
