Trump Vows ‘Strong Response’ to Iranian Attacks on U.S. Bases in Jordan

Washington / Tehran (Terror Monitor) — U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed a “strong response” to Iranian attacks targeting U.S. military bases in Jordan, while also leaving open the possibility of a diplomatic solution with Tehran.

In a telephone interview with Fox News, Trump said the United States would take strong action in response to Iran’s attacks.

His remarks came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that Iranian forces had targeted two U.S. air bases in Jordan — King Hussein and Al Azraq — in retaliation for American strikes.

The IRGC claimed that the attacks caused heavy damage to “technical and maintenance infrastructure and enemy fighter aircraft” at the bases.

Trump said U.S. forces had allowed one Iranian missile to pass through their air defenses because it was not aimed at a target, while other Iranian missiles were intercepted.

Jordan also said its air-defense forces had intercepted and destroyed eight Iranian missiles that entered its airspace.

Despite the escalation, Trump indicated that he remained open to diplomacy.

“They really want to meet with us, but I don’t know if they can be trusted to make a deal,” Trump said.

Trump Says Iran Is a “Failed State”

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump described Iran as having formally become a “failed state.”

“Iran has officially become a failed state. It is finished!” Trump wrote, claiming that Iran no longer had an effective navy or air force and that its currency was ineffective.

Trump also alleged that the Iranian government was unable to pay its military and police personnel and claimed inflation had reached 300 percent.

He further accused Iran’s leadership of being in complete disarray and said it was incapable of properly representing the country.

According to Trump, Iran’s remaining capabilities included “fake news” coming from the United States, a willingness to kill its own protesters, and what he described as a long list of unfounded claims.

Trump also claimed that more than 100,000 people had been killed in Iran and said the country’s leadership should face prosecution for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Three Reported Dead in U.S. Strike on Lark Island

Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that a person wounded in a U.S. strike on Lark Island in the Persian Gulf had died from their injuries, bringing the officially reported death toll to three.

Earlier, the governor of Qeshm County, which administers Lark Island, had reported that two people were killed and several others injured.

In a statement, the IRGC said that “several fighters and civilians” had been killed or wounded in the U.S. attack on Lark Island.

The United States announced Sunday evening that it had targeted two Iranian systems used to lay naval mines on Lark Island.

Iran, meanwhile, said it had retaliated by targeting U.S. bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

The U.S. strike on Lark Island came after a period of relative pause in direct attacks between the two countries in the Persian Gulf that had lasted for nearly a month.

IRGC Claims Missile and Drone Attacks on Jordan

The IRGC announced on the night of August 30 that it had carried out coordinated attacks using ballistic missiles and drones against Jordan’s King Hussein and Al Azraq air bases in response to U.S. strikes on Lark Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to an IRGC statement, fighter-jet hangars were destroyed in the attacks. The group warned that “every attack will be met with an even more devastating response.”

Iranian media, including state radio, reported hearing explosions in southern areas of Jordan, including near Aqaba and around bases hosting U.S. forces.

Jordanian media prominently reported a statement by the spokesman for the Jordanian Armed Forces on August 31, saying that air-defense systems had destroyed eight missiles that entered Jordanian airspace in the early hours of the morning.

The military spokesman confirmed that all eight missiles had been “successfully destroyed.”

The latest developments mark another sharp escalation between Iran and the United States, with both sides claiming retaliatory strikes while diplomatic contacts remain a possible avenue for de-escalation.
