JERUSALEM (Terror Monitor) — Two Israeli soldiers were killed in an explosion in southern Lebanon, marking the first Israeli military fatalities since the ceasefire with Iran-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah took effect in June, the Israeli military said.
According to the military, the blast occurred in an area of southern Lebanon that remains under Israeli control and was previously considered a Hezbollah stronghold. Four other Israeli soldiers were wounded in the explosion.
An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the soldiers' vehicle struck an explosive device shortly after entering the village of Majdal Zoun. An investigation is underway to determine the type of explosive used.
Israeli media reported the deaths on Wednesday, while the military officially confirmed them on Thursday.
A day earlier, the Israeli military carried out fresh airstrikes on what it described as Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, accusing the Iran-backed group of violating the ceasefire agreement.
Lebanon's Health Ministry said the strikes on two separate locations killed at least two people and injured 20 others.
