India Signs Deal With US to Acquire Javelin Anti-Tank Missile Systems

NEW DELHI (Terror Monitor) — India has signed an agreement with the United States to acquire Javelin anti-tank missile systems, the U.S. Embassy in India said Friday. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

According to the embassy, the Javelin is a medium-range guided missile system designed to engage a variety of targets, particularly armored vehicles. The system is jointly produced by U.S. defense companies Lockheed Martin and RTX.

The embassy said the Javelin missile system is already in service with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps and is also operated by several other countries.

U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the agreement would create new opportunities for cooperation between the defense industries of the two countries.

“We see significant potential for expanded cooperation in the future that will further strengthen the defense industrial bases of both countries,” he said.

New Delhi did not immediately issue a statement on the agreement.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India is the world’s fifth-largest military spender and ranks second after Ukraine among the world’s largest arms importers.

India and the United States also signed a 10-year defense framework agreement last October. Although relations between the two countries have come under strain in recent months, largely over Washington’s heavy tariffs on Indian goods, its efforts to penalize India over purchases of Russian oil, and closer U.S. ties with Pakistan, defense relations between New Delhi and Washington have remained largely unaffected by these differences.
