Washington, D۔C. (Terror Monitor) — U.S. President Donald Trump is attending a memorial ceremony at the Pentagon on Friday to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Trump is marking the anniversary at the Pentagon for the second consecutive year. The New York-born president last attended the 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero in 2024.
A series of commemorative events are being held, including the lighting of candles and the reading of the names of those killed in the attacks.
Earlier in the day, amid rain, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and senior U.S. military officials raised a large American flag over the Pentagon. One of the hijacked passenger planes crashed into the building on September 11, 2001.
Vice President JD Vance is expected to attend the 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York alongside former U.S. presidents, while other administration officials will participate in a ceremony in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Last year, Vance had also planned to travel to New York for the anniversary but changed his schedule and went to Salt Lake City to express solidarity with the family of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
During last year's memorial ceremony at the Pentagon, Trump delivered remarks recalling the events of the day. He also spoke about some of the final conversations between passengers aboard the hijacked planes and their families.
The September 11 attacks had profound and lasting effects on the political and security landscape of the United States and the wider world.
According to a new poll, about half of American adults consider the September 11, 2001, attacks one of the most significant historical events of their lives.
Many people continue to observe the anniversary as a day of personal reflection and remembrance, while schools across the country teach younger generations about the attacks. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, whose consequences—from personal grief to prolonged wars—were felt for decades.
