Tehran (Terror Monitor) — Iran has executed two men arrested in connection with anti-government protests earlier this year, according to the judiciary-affiliated Mizan News Agency. The two were convicted over the killing of police officers during large-scale demonstrations in the central city of Isfahan.
Mizan reported that at least 27 people have been executed so far in connection with the protests and related unrest.
The demonstrations began in late December last year amid Iran's worsening economic crisis and quickly expanded into nationwide anti-government protests. Iranian authorities responded with a broad security crackdown to suppress the unrest.
Human rights organizations have long criticized Iran's extensive use of the death penalty, accusing authorities of using executions to intimidate dissent and silence opposition.
According to Amnesty International, Iran carried out at least 2,159 executions last year, the highest annual figure recorded since 1981.
Following the Iran conflict, Iranian authorities have also executed several individuals accused of espionage and a number of political prisoners.
