Baghdad (Terror Monitor) — The Iraqi government has given Iran-backed armed groups until the end of September to surrender their weapons, granting them an additional three months to disarm.
The announcement was made by an Iraqi government spokesperson during a press conference on Sunday.
The decision comes ahead of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi's expected visit to the United States in approximately two weeks at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to reports, Washington has increased pressure on Baghdad to disarm Iran-linked armed groups before the visit.
During the recent regional conflict, some of the Iran-aligned factions, which identify themselves as part of the "Axis of Resistance," reportedly carried out attacks against U.S. interests in Iraq.
