London Police Arrest Two People Suspected of Links to Iranian Intelligence

LONDON (Terror Monitor) — London police have arrested two people suspected of providing assistance to Iran’s intelligence service.

The Metropolitan Police said the two suspects were arrested on suspicion of assisting an Iranian intelligence service in London.

A 60-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were arrested during raids in London on Wednesday as part of an investigation into suspected offences under the National Security Act.

Police said the two suspects were detained on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service. They were later released on bail under strict conditions, with their bail set to remain in place until the end of October.

The Metropolitan Police said the arrests are not linked to any of the incidents or attacks involving Jewish or Iranian communities across London earlier this year.

The force said the arrests followed an investigation that began after searches of two properties in north and northwest London in June.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said she was aware that news of the arrests would be concerning to some people.

“Over the past year, we have seen a significant increase in the pace of our work around threats to national security and the state, and this investigation is part of that work,” she said.

She added: “As we have demonstrated in this case, if we suspect that activity could pose a threat to the security of the UK or the public, we will not hesitate to take action.”
