Saudi-Led Coalition Intercepts Houthi Ballistic Missile and Drone as Military Operations Intensify in Yemen

RIYADH/SANAA (Terror Monitor) — The Saudi-led military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government said it intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile and a drone launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels towards southern Saudi Arabia on Sunday, November 1, amid escalating military tensions and renewed coalition operations targeting Houthi military capabilities.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki announced in separate statements that Saudi air defence systems had successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile heading towards the Kingdom’s southern region, followed by the interception of a Houthi drone over Asir province.

The coalition did not disclose the precise intended targets of the missile and drone or provide details about their launch locations. It also did not report any casualties or damage resulting from the interceptions.

The developments came shortly after Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence issued early-warning alerts for residents of Abha and Khamis Mushait in the southwestern Asir region, warning of a potential hostile attack and urging people to follow official safety instructions.

Authorities subsequently announced that the danger had passed in the affected areas.

Saudi-led coalition launches targeted military operations against Houthis

The latest interceptions followed a separate announcement by the Saudi-led coalition that it had launched targeted military operations against what it described as key Houthi military assets and strategic resources used to support the group's military activities.

In a statement, coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said the operation was aimed at neutralising important capabilities and resources used by the Houthi militia to strengthen its military infrastructure and conduct attacks.

Al-Maliki said the coalition would continue taking and implementing necessary operational measures to deter Houthi activities.

He called on the Houthi group to immediately cease all hostile and aggressive actions against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Yemen, describing the attacks as reckless and dangerous.

The coalition did not identify the specific locations targeted in the latest operation, disclose the types of military facilities struck or provide an assessment of the damage caused.

The announcement nevertheless signals an escalation in the Saudi-led coalition's efforts to weaken Houthi capabilities, particularly their ballistic missile and drone programmes, which have increasingly threatened Saudi territory and critical infrastructure.

Yemeni government forces report shooting down two Houthi drones

Separately, Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces announced that they had shot down two drones belonging to the Houthi group in the Sabr area of Taiz governorate.

According to military sources, government air defence units detected and engaged the drones before successfully bringing both aircraft down.

Yemeni forces also reported intercepting a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis towards the southern region before it could reach its intended target.

The military said its forces remained on high alert and were prepared to respond to further missile and drone attacks.

The reported interceptions in Taiz came amid continued fighting between government forces and Houthi fighters along several front lines in the governorate.

Yemen’s government forces have increasingly relied on air defence systems and other counter-drone measures to prevent Houthi unmanned aircraft from reaching military positions and other sensitive locations.

Rising missile and drone threat to Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has faced repeated missile and drone attacks attributed to the Houthis in recent weeks, with the group increasingly targeting military installations, airports, energy infrastructure and other strategic facilities.

The attacks have heightened security concerns across the Kingdom, particularly in the southern provinces bordering Yemen.

On October 27, Reuters reported that the Saudi-led coalition had intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles and four drones launched towards the Kingdom’s eastern and southern regions.

Saudi authorities also issued emergency warnings in several areas, including the Eastern Province and Al-Kharj, before confirming that the immediate danger had passed.

The renewed attacks have taken place amid an intensification of the wider conflict in Yemen, where fighting between Houthi forces and the internationally recognised government has escalated after the collapse of the fragile security arrangements that had largely contained hostilities since 2022.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country's north, have developed an arsenal of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles that they have repeatedly used against targets inside Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi-led coalition has responded with airstrikes and military operations aimed at destroying missile launchers, drone facilities and other military infrastructure.

The latest interceptions and the announcement of additional coalition operations underscore the growing risk of further escalation along the Saudi-Yemeni front, with regional security and civilian infrastructure increasingly exposed to missile and drone attacks.
