Pakistan: Two Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Militants Arrested in Karachi

KARACHI (Terror Monitor) — Pakistan’s Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested two militants affiliated with the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) Ataur Rehman alias Naeem Bukhari group during an intelligence-based operation in Karachi.

According to the CTD spokesperson, the arrested militants were wanted in connection with IED attacks and targeted killings in Karachi. They were identified as Muhammad Jameel Ansari alias Shoaib alias Chacha and Hamad Ansari alias Zarrar alias Babloo.

The CTD said both suspects were listed among the most wanted individuals in the department’s Red Book Edition No. 10 and had been hiding since 2015 and 2016. Officials said they were attempting to reorganize a sleeper cell network in Karachi.

According to the CTD, Muhammad Jameel Ansari was a key member of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Naeem Bukhari group and a close associate of Naeem Bukhari. The department said he had received training in making IEDs and explosive circuits in Afghanistan.

The CTD said Ansari was involved in facilitating militant activities and went underground after the arrest of Naeem Bukhari.

The department said the second arrested militant, Hamad Ali Ansari alias Zarrar alias Babloo, was a close associate of several banned group members, including Dildar alias Chacha, Imran Bhatti, Ishaq Bobby and Asim Kapri.

The CTD spokesperson said the arrested militants were wanted in connection with several attacks in Karachi, including an IED attack on a Rangers vehicle in Korangi in 2013, the Karachi airport attack in 2014, and an IED attack on a Rapid Response Force (RRF) vehicle in 2015.

The CTD said the Naeem Bukhari group was involved in attacks targeting government officials and personnel, as well as sectarian violence and targeted killings of members of the Shia community in Karachi.

The CTD said explosive material, including four slabs of explosives, five detonators, 10 meters of prima cord, remote-control devices, and five pistols were recovered from the arrested militants.

Cases have been registered against the suspects under anti-terrorism laws and other sections, while further investigation is underway. The CTD has also formed teams to trace and arrest their alleged associates.
