US Launches New Strikes on Iran, Reimposes Oil Export Restrictions

Washington D.C (Terror Monitor) — The United States has launched a new wave of military strikes against Iran, targeting multiple sites in the country's south, while also reimposing restrictions on Iranian oil exports. The actions come after Washington accused Tehran of attacking three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement posted on X, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had begun a series of "powerful strikes" against Iran to impose heavy costs for targeting commercial shipping carrying innocent civilians through an international waterway.

According to CENTCOM, the strikes were carried out in response to Iran's alleged attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The command described Iran's actions as "unprovoked, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire."

A U.S. official said the operation targeted Iran's air defense systems, coastal surveillance infrastructure, surface-to-air missile batteries, anti-ship cruise missile sites, and drone launch facilities.

Following the strikes, large flames and thick black smoke were seen rising from the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

Iranian media reported multiple explosions in the southern coastal city of Sirik, while confirming that airstrikes also struck Qeshm Island and Bandar Abbas.

According to Iranian state media, a fishing pier in Bandar Abbas was hit during the attacks, setting several fishing boats on fire.

Iranian media also reported that several people were injured after missile fragments struck the commercial pier in Sirik, although no official casualty figures were immediately released.

Following the attacks, Iranian media reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian cut short his visit to Iraq and departed for Tehran.

Meanwhile, the United States has reinstated restrictions on Iran's oil exports.

According to Reuters reports, Washington blamed Iran for targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and responded by tightening sanctions on Iranian oil sales.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached between the two countries, the United States had previously allowed Iran to export crude oil and petrochemical products until August 21. However, the U.S. Treasury Department has now shortened that authorization period, limiting it to July 17.

Reacting to the decision, Iran's Foreign Ministry said the renewed sanctions violate the memorandum of understanding.

The ministry said Iran would take appropriate measures to protect its national interests and security, adding that the United States bears responsibility for violating the agreement and the consequences that may follow.
