WASHINGTON/TEHRAN (Terror Monitor) — The United States has launched a second consecutive day of airstrikes against Iran, with U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) saying American forces carried out additional strikes under the direction of the Commander-in-Chief to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM said the latest operations were conducted in response to what it described as Iran’s recent “unprovoked attacks” on commercial vessels and their crews transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military command said Washington was holding Iran accountable for alleged aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews in the strategically important international waterway.
A U.S. official told Reuters that the latest strikes against Iran were expected to be broader and larger in scale than the attacks carried out on Tuesday. U.S. news outlet Axios also reported, citing a U.S. official, that the scope of the new operation was significantly wider than the previous strikes.
Iranian media reported that U.S. warplanes targeted the Imam Ali naval base in Chabahar, located in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that around 10 explosions were heard in Chabahar and Konarak, with power outages reported in some areas.
Iranian media also reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Konarak, Chabahar, Iranshahr and near Bushehr.
Iranian reports said the Bushehr nuclear power plant was not damaged in the strikes.
According to Iranian media, debris from projectiles fired during the strikes on Chabahar fell near Imam Ali Hospital, causing damage. Iranian state media also reported that Iran’s Iranshahr airport building and runway were targeted, with smoke seen rising from the area. Iranian officials said one person was killed in the incident.
Iranian outlets further reported that a major Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) military base in southern Bushehr province was hit, with several casualties reported.
Iranian state television reported that missiles or projectiles struck the disputed Abu Musa island in the Gulf. The semi-official Fars news agency reported that eight explosions were heard in eastern areas of Bandar Abbas.
Reports also claimed that Abu Musa island and Sirik were targeted.
CENTCOM said earlier that U.S. strikes on Tuesday targeted more than 80 sites across Iran, including air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar installations, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 IRGC small boats.
Iranian media reported that a senior Iranian military commander and eight personnel were killed in the recent U.S. strikes.
Meanwhile, Iranian media said Iranian forces may launch major attacks against U.S. military bases in the region.
The developments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington had attacked Iran and warned that further strikes could follow if necessary.
